The James Hutton Institute is inviting anyone with an interest in the future of agriculture to Glensaugh Research Farm for a Farming Taster Day on Thursday 25 September.
Organised as part of Climate Week North East, the taster offers a chance to meet the team behind the Climate-Positive Farming Initiative, tour Glensaugh with a farm walk and find out more about the incredible projects Hutton staff are working on.
During the 90-minute walk, visitors will cross the stunning Glensaugh landscape as they learn how the initiative aims to use transformational farming methods to achieve net zero – or even negative – carbon emissions while protecting the farm’s natural assets and ensuring long-term financial stability.
Following the walk, visitors can head back indoors for a series of displays on specific research projects at the Hutton, such as HydroGlen, which aims to create a hydrogen-powered farm at Glensaugh, and the Climate Innovation Hub, which helps businesses and organisations work with the James Hutton Institute to fast-track solutions to the climate and nature crises.
The tour and displays will include muddy details about peatland restoration, addressing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, integrating trees and wildlife on the farm, natural flood management, managing farmland for beneficial insects and plenty more innovative farming methods.
Other displays will feature details on the leaky barriers and natural flood management methods at Glensaugh, the OurSmartFarm app and much more.
Two tours are available on the day – one beginning at 10am and another at 2pm.
Tickets are free and can be booked in advance through Eventbrite.
The farm walk covers 3km with steep inclines and muddy conditions, so hiking boots, waterproofs and warm clothing are recommended. The farm is family-friendly, however the trail is not suitable for wheeled transport users such as pushchairs, wheelchairs, motorised scooters.
