The Managing Director of Aberdeen-based HSE consultancy Integrity, has been named as the UK’s most influential health and safety professional.
The national competition, which is organised by SHP - Health and Safety News, names a single recipient every year for its coveted 'Most Influential Individual in Health & Safety' award, and this year’s judging panel of industry experts voted for Steven Harris.
The judges were drawn to Steven for several reasons, but primarily in acknowledgement of his firm and vocal commitment to promoting strong ethical and moral values, which have been a hallmark of his impressively varied OSH career. Specifically, in 2023, Steven gained notoriety far beyond his core industry (energy) by launching Integrity HSE and publishing his first book, The Little Book of Leadership.
Integrity HSE, which is based in Aberdeen’s Queens Road, has gone from strength to strength in it’s first year, securing some of the world’s best-known companies in a client portfolio that stretches from oil & gas to defence & aerospace. The company has also grown in geographical footprint, and now has an increasingly strong footprint within the Middle East. You can learn more at: www.integrityhse.com.
Steven wrote The Little Book of Leadership to address the lack of leadership training available to the energy industry, although the lessons in his book can be applied within any workplace. He told us, “Coming from a strong security background where leadership value was recognised, I was amazed to arrive in an industry with major accident hazards that did not require formal training for its leaders”.
Integrity HSE now conducts regular leadership training and coaching to a multitude of organisations. This type of professional development ensures that organisations can turn their top talent into the next generation of company leaders. Although Steven facilitates much of this training himself, he is surrounded by an exceptionally strong team of industry and military experts, as well as a psychologist.
Steven said: “I am an advocate of the Jim Collins philosophy about making sure the right people are on the bus before figuring out where to drive it. The best organisations think about the who before the what. At Integrity HSE, we have the best people on our bus, and because of that they make everyone around them look good, including me. This award is dedicated to all of them”.
