Inverurie butcher Donald Russell is reportedly set to shut - with around 120 jobs on the line.

The firm, which has been operating for more than 50 years, is proposing to close following a review of its finances and market conditions, The Press and Journal reports.

Staff at Donald Russell's Inverurie site will now begin a collective consultation process.

Interim chief executive Matthew Flood said: “Donald Russell has been a respected Aberdeenshire business for more than 50 years, but the company has faced mounting challenges in recent years.

“Unprecedented volatility in meat prices, unpredictable energy costs and the rising costs of doing business have created a perfect storm.

“That has left the business unable to continue trading in its current form."

Meanwhile, Aberdeen butcher and fishmonger JK Fine Foods has also closed. It previously occupied part of a unit on Chattan Place.
