The introduction of a modern CCTV system for Inverurie town centre has taken a major step forward.
Funding has now been secured through developer obligations for the project which is being delivered by the ‘We are Inverurie’ business improvement district (BID) with support from Aberdeenshire Council.
The use of this funding has been made possible following agreement from developer Bruce Allan of Malcolm Allan Housebuilders which will enable the project to progress.
Aimed at improving community safety, while also supporting local businesses and enhancing the overall town centre experience, the system will provide high-quality surveillance coverage across key areas of the town centre and will be operated by Police Scotland.
The rollout of CCTV follows sustained demand from local businesses and residents, with safety and public reassurance consistently raised as a priority concern.
Once operational, the system will help deter anti-social behaviour, support crime prevention and provide valuable evidence to assist Police Scotland in investigating incidents. It’s also expected to support the evening and night-time economy by creating a safer and more welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
Councillor Ewenson, chair of the council’s Garioch Area Committee, said: "This is a significant step forward for Inverurie. The introduction of a town centre CCTV system reflects the priorities of our communities and businesses, who have consistently highlighted the importance of safety and reassurance. This investment will help create a safer, more welcoming environment and support the continued vitality of the town centre."
‘We Are Inverurie’ BID manager Derek Ritchie added: “This project has been a long-standing priority for the BID and local businesses. It is about protecting investment, supporting our town centre, and ensuring Inverurie remains a place where people feel safe to live, work and visit. Securing the funding needed to deliver CCTV is an important step in strengthening confidence in the town centre."
