Iran has considered attacking US military targets in Europe if Donald Trump escalates the conflict, according to the Financial Times.

Two people close to the Iranian regime told the FT forces had assessed potential strikes on US assets in south-eastern Europe, including Bulgaria, while Cyprus was also identified as a possible target.

Iran has separately examined attacking subsea fibre-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz, amid growing expectations in Tehran that renewed conflict with Washington is inevitable.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has previously warned that “any base that is used to launch an attack on Iranian territory will be considered a legitimate target”.

The warnings come as negotiations over reopening the Strait of Hormuz remain stalled and President Trump said there were “no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled” with Tehran.
