UK energy companies have been put on high alert after Iranian hackers forced a British power plant offline for four days.
GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero have briefed energy bosses with “advice, direction and next steps” following the attack, which is believed to have been carried out in July by an Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps hacking unit known as CyberAv3ngers.
The Government has declined to identify the site involved but said it was a small-scale generator and there was no risk to the wider energy system.
A government spokesman said: “The UK has a highly resilient energy system. We work closely with the energy sector to protect infrastructure and ensure the highest security standards.
“This story refers to an incident impacting a small-scale energy generator, and at no point was there a risk to the wider energy system.”
