A landmark ceasefire agreement was signed on Thursday between Israel and Hama, marking the first step toward ending nearly two years of conflict.

Under the terms, fighting is to halt within 24 hours of Israel's cabinet approval, and Hamas will begin releasing the 48 Israeli hostages over the next 72 hours.

In return, Israel is to free about 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli jails and 1,700 detainees from Gaza, a Palestinian source told the BBC.

The agreement will also see a major surge in humanitarian aid to Gaza, with hundreds of aid trucks expected to enter the territory daily.

President Donald Trump, who has proposed a 20-point peace plan, took to his social media last night with early details of the ceasefire.

He said: "ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace."
