Aberdeen-based James Fisher Asset Information Services (AIS), has unveiled a major enhancement to its R2S platform with the launch of a new 3D Model Viewer, enabling industrial operators to view engineering models alongside reality capture data within a single environment.
Developed to help asset-intensive industries make faster, more informed decisions, the new capability allows users to view full asset 3D models alongside their existing 360° imagery and point cloud data. Users can switch seamlessly between views or display them side-by-side, creating a more complete picture of their assets without the need for multiple software applications.
"Many of our customers rely on both engineering models and reality capture data, but these datasets have often been viewed in separate applications," said Martin MacRae, Product Line Director at AIS. "By bringing them together in R2S, we're making it significantly easier for teams to locate equipment, verify asset conditions and plan work with greater confidence."
The new feature addresses common challenges faced by maintenance, integrity and turnaround teams. While 3D models provide a clear understanding of how equipment and systems are designed and connected, they can become outdated over time. Reality data, including 360° imagery and laser scans, shows what is actually on site. Combining both in a single platform enables users to quickly validate information, identify discrepancies and reduce the risk of planning errors.
Users can search and navigate directly to equipment within the 3D model, isolate components to better understand piping routes and equipment relationships, and compare model data against real-world conditions. The ability to view 3D models side-by-side with reality data is particularly valuable for offshore planning activities, helping teams complete more work remotely and reduce the need for site visits.
The capability is powered by Autodesk APS technology and supports a wide range of industry-standard 3D model formats. Models retain their original coordinate systems and can be uploaded to dedicated cloud environments, allowing organisations to integrate multiple asset models into a single project.
Beyond improving day-to-day maintenance and inspection planning, the feature strengthens R2S's role as a trusted digital asset information platform. By providing greater visibility of equipment locations and asset configuration, the 3D Model Viewer lays the foundation for deeper integration with engineering documentation, maintenance systems and wider digital twin initiatives.
