Laudonia, Scotland’s dynamic baroque ensemble, and award-winning soprano Susan Hamilton are embarking on a six-concert tour from Scotland to London, celebrating the musical journey of Sir John Clerk of Penicuik. Fountainhall at the Cross (formerly known as Queen’s Cross Church in Albyn Place) will have the honour to welcome the ensemble in their stop in Aberdeen on Wednesday 6 September, with the concert starting at 7.30 pm.

Clerk, a significant figure in Scottish history, made a Grand Tour through Europe in the 1960s and this unique programme for soprano, trumpet, strings and bass continuo brings to life music he may have heard on his travels. Featuring works from composers Clerk met and studied with, this project highlights how Clerk’s journey through Europe influenced some of the best music of its time to come out of Scotland. Despite a fire that destroyed much of Clerk’s musical output, his surviving five vocal cantatas are a testament to his talent as a composer, making this tour a celebration of his musical legacy.

Scottish soprano Susan Hamilton declared about the Grand Tour: “Sir John Clerk of Penicuik’s Grand Tour is of national importance. We were inspired by his incredible journey and fascinated that music played such a significant role opening doors and offering him wonderful opportunities. Music has always had the power to break down all barriers. It is a language without prejudice.”

Despite being based in Scotland, Laudonia stands out by bringing together leading exponents of early music from both Scotland and Europe. This fusion of diverse experiences and ideas infuses their performances with an exciting vitality and energy. While their primary focus lies in giving concerts and producing recordings, Laudonia is equally committed to fostering educational and outreach programs within Scotland and beyond. Collaborating with schools, conservatoires, and concert halls, the ensemble aims to create projects that are both educational and stimulating, allowing young people and new audiences to experience, learn from, and be inspired by live music.

Fountainhall at the Cross (formerly known as Queen’s Cross church in Albyn Place) was chosen by the ensemble for their central location and exceptional facilities and acoustic.
