Local artist designs illuminated trophies for Northern Star Business Awards

With a background in Architecture, Jamie Cameron, who runs local art and design firm 'Aberdeen Art' was tasked with designing this year's trophy for the prestigious Northern Star Business Awards held at the AECC. The awards, which celebrate a variety of local business achievements and successes, were designed from solid oak and machined perspex, and individually made in his workshops based near Castle Fraser. The award designs feature a detailed engraving which is brought to life by concealed LED lighting built in to the piece, and the name of each winner and title of their awards were engraved onto the oak base. The pieces made a big impact on the night as all were shown illuminated in a range of different colours!

Mr Cameron, whose other artworks include detailed architectural illustrations of local buildings, Highland Cow sculptures in rusted steel, and cityscape sculptures, said that the style of the awards came from a new idea he had been developing to capture cities: 'Trying to come up with an award which celebrates a range of City and Shire landmarks, as well as the name and award of the winner was a challenge- the cityscape sculptures I normally make are around double the scale, and so compacting so much detail into a smaller award was difficult, but the pieces came out beautifully and ended up working very well- I also wanted to be sure that some reference to the local fishing and oil industries was included in the piece, and so a fishing trawler and oil rig were incorporated into the composition to bring to light the industrial heritage of the area.'

Having originally studied architecture, and now working for himself, the awards were an excellent chance for Jamie to create something different, and meet new potential customers: 'Attending the awards was a great experience, and it was exciting to see prominent members of the local business community being presented with the awards which I had designed. The format of the pieces is very versatile, and so I hope I can build upon the success of this commission in coming up with new and exciting artwork.'

Jamie's work can be seen in Gallery One Twenty One on Holburn Street, Opaque Glassware in Rasemount Place, as well as online at www.aberdeen-art.co.uk, where you can see a range of the new cityscape sculptures, as well as order pieces, find out about bespoke commissions, and find out more about the creation of the Awards.
