A local charity is calling for people to enter an off-road running challenge that will raise funds for an oncology and haematology outpatient centre in Aberdeen.

The Glack Trail has been touted as a 'rollercoaster' running event, and Friends of ANCHOR is encouraging runners of all abilities to sign up and tackle the undulating course.

The new 8km trail event is being organised in aid of the charity’s ANCHORED Together appeal to raise £2m towards The ANCHOR Centre. Free places are available for those who can pledge to raise or donate £80 in sponsorship.

The run will take place on September 4, in woodland near Dunecht.

Organised by the Ratcliffe family, the event marks a new chapter in their support of Friends of ANCHOR, with previous Glack events having already raised £80,000.

Stephen Ratcliffe said: “This is the seventh year we’ve partnered with Friends of ANCHOR, but this event looks really different to our previous ones, which were muddy obstacle runs. This is something new for us and new for the area and we really hope the people of the North-east will get behind it.

“We’ve unearthed some brilliant trails to create a rollercoaster of a trail run which will be fun for everyone, whether you’re a hardened trail runner looking for a real challenge, or a beginner looking for your first trail adventure.”

The run is open to ages 8+ and is suitable for any fitness abilities, with walking encouraged if needed.

“This isn’t just a trail for elite and experienced hill runners,” added Stephen. “We look forward to seeing seasoned runners with us on the day, but we’re extending just as warm a welcome to anyone taking on their first ever trail run. Regardless of your level of experience on trails, this will be a really rewarding event to complete.”

While the Glack Trail is a new event, it’s not the first time the Glack flag has been flown. For several years, the Ratcliffe family organised Glack Attack, a popular mud run with impressive obstacles like the “hay bale hurdles”, “giant’s stepping stones”, and a final cold water plunge called the “not-so-hot-tub”. Friends of ANCHOR has been the charity partner for Glack Attack since 2015, and to date the funds raised amount to £80,000, through participant sponsorship and a donation from entry fees.

This year, fundraisers’ efforts will support Friends of ANCHOR’s ANCHORED Together appeal, which aims to raise £2m for additional extras within The ANCHOR Centre, set to open in 2023. The core cost of the build is covered by the Scottish Government, and Friends of ANCHOR’s fundraising will equip the building with important additions to enhance the atmosphere and upgrade the equipment and technology within the Centre.

Carly Munro, donor care lead for Friends of ANCHOR, said: “The success of Glack Attack is astonishing and with £80k raised, it’s left a lasting legacy in the North-east. We’re really excited to see the Ratcliffe family turn the page to a new chapter of Glack events and we’re grateful to have their continued and heartfelt support.

“A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of hosting some ‘trail testers’ to put the new route to the test. It was a huge hit with our runners and the wonderful thing about the course is that it’s accessible for pro runners and new trail runners alike – all that’s needed is a pair of trainers or trail shoes. We know from experience what a fantastic atmosphere there is on Glack event days, and this one promises a warm welcome and a great challenge for everyone.”

Matt Huntington, one of Friends of ANCHOR’s ‘test’ runners who completed the course, said: “The trail itself is stunning, a proper cross-country route, without an inch of road or tarmac in sight. It’s definitely not your average 8km run. It’s a great challenge that will make you work hard, and you’ll be rewarded with amazing panoramic views. You’ll get to the end and want to pat yourself on the back – I’d certainly encourage anyone to sign up.”
