Maersk Oil North Sea UK Limited took pupils from Robert Gordon’s College on a ‘Quest for Oil’ using their unique online game to explore the underground, getting to the heart of the world’s vital and challenging business: the oil in
Putting their geographical knowledge to the test, fourth, fifth and sixth year pupils embarked on the thrilling adventure of global oil exploration and were soon hit with scenarios of real life challenges that can be encountered. Working in teams, pupils took on their friends in this multi-player game that really put their knowledge and strategic skills to the test.
Dr Jenny Gray, head of Geography at Robert Gordon’s College said: “The pupils embraced the real-time strategy game based on working practices including locating oil fields, analysing seismic data and drilling through earth layers to produce oil. The game provided various challenges for the teams to test their knowledge and strategic skills. For example, The importance of crew safety and training during storms and the difficulties working in some of the most challenging locations in the world.”
Claire Sherry, geologist at Maersk Oil North Sea UK Limited added: “Quest for Oil offers the pupils a glimpse into the innovative business of oil and gas exploration. It was great to see the pupils really engaging with the game and putting their analytical skills to the test whilst tackling complex strategic decisions from deciding where to drill through to maximising oil production and maintaining facilities.”
Opening up the oil business to everyone, Maersk Group launched ‘Quest for Oil’ in 2013 as the first computer game about the global oil industry.
