Specialist risk and marine consultancy Marex has transformed vessel compliance speeds for an independent oil and gas producer, reducing the time required for fleet assurance from six days to less than six hours.

The dramatic shift in efficiency supports a critical monthly offloading operation involving a dedicated pool of three specialised tankers.

Operating within the 500-metre zone of a production installation requires rigorous, continuous compliance. Previously, the manual processing of documentation created a six-day lead time, leaving the operator exposed to significant financial and operational risks if a tanker fell out of assurance.

Data-led maritime safety

To solve this, Marex implemented a proactive risk monitoring framework led by their in-house data scientist.

By moving away from reactive, sequential document processing, Marex established a state of data alignment across the three-vessel fleet, which requires only minimal time to assess and respond to compliance status changes.

Key elements of the streamlined service include:

  • automated data pipelines: a robust capture framework ensures all vessel certifications are updated and accessible in real time
  • rapid assurance checks: the system allows marine specialists to perform instant status assessments, with data automatically updating based on specific operational dates
  • proactive monitoring: the framework identifies potential compliance lapses before they occur, allowing for preventative action rather than corrective delays

Efficiency driven by a fixed-price model

The project highlights the benefit of Marex’s fixed-price approach, which encourages the development of technological efficiencies that directly benefit the client.

“By combining deep marine assurance expertise with modern data science, we have radically redefined what speed and reliability look like in maritime compliance,” said managing director Wayne Henderson.

“Eliminating the six-day bottleneck not only reduces uncertainty for the producer but ensures that safety and governance are maintained through a much more agile, transparent process.”

The transformation demonstrates how the adoption of data automation allows energy firms to manage complex maritime activities with unprecedented efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of regulatory rigour.
