Hackers have given Asos two weeks to pay a ransom or face the release of customer data stolen in a cyber attack on the online fashion retailer.

Asos confirmed it was investigating unauthorised activity involving third-party platforms used to communicate with customers after thousands of shoppers received a notification claiming the company had been hacked.

The retailer said: “Basic personal information including name and contact details may have been accessed. We do not believe that payment-card information or account passwords, were impacted.”

The hackers, identifying themselves as the Xuanye group, told The Telegraph: “Our message is clear, and simple to recognise. The organisation must contact us or we will leak it, that is what we said.

“The two-week period is intended for them to make contact, they know what happened.”

Shares in Asos fell more than 10% on Tuesday, although its website and app continued to operate normally.
