Energy giant EnQuest is reportedly weighing up an offer to purchase BP's oil and gas interests in the North Sea.
Speaking to CNBC following publication of the company's H1 2026 results, EnQuest CEO Amjad Bseisu said there is still “tremendous opportunity” in the UK oil and gas sector.
Asked directly if EnQuest is interested in BP's North Sea assets, Bseisu said: "Yes."
He added: “There’s only a handful of companies left, so there’s only a handful of companies that would be interested."
In July, BP announced plans to sell off its remaining North Sea assets in a retreat from the basin following years of punishing tax regimes and fiscal uncertainty.
And last month it was reported the firm had begun discussions with prospective buyers, with documents revealing a £2.5billion package.
Bseisu's comments come on the back of EnQuest posting its results for the six months to June 30 which revealed a post-tax loss of $39.9million, a significant improvement on the $173.5million loss recorded in the same period in 2025.
That improvement was driven by a 9% increase in global production year-on-year to 41,544 Boepd (H1 2025: 38,257 Boepd), with "transformational acquisitions in Malaysia".
The results come against a backdrop of elevated but volatile crude prices.
