Finance giant Martin Gilbert has urged Aberdeen City Council to back the “bold and ambitious” plans for a new Aberdeen FC community stadium at the beach, warning the city and its people are in “desperate need of positivity”.

Speaking to The Press and Journal, the Aberdeen Asset Management co-founder said having the Dons as an anchor tenant would provide certainty and long-term revenues for the local authority.

He said: “Having Aberdeen Football Club as an anchor and operating tenant whilst committing to a long-term lease and securing other tenants and investment, provides certainty and guaranteed revenues for the local authority which would cover a loan funding the project.”

Mr Gilbert added: “This is precisely the type of bold and ambitious initiative the Council should be progressing,” arguing that a multi-purpose community stadium and leisure complex at the beach, catalysed by the club’s “proud heritage and brand”, would “go a long way” towards restoring confidence in the city.
