Aberdeen Foyer has announced that supporter Matt Thomson will take on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro this summer to raise funds for the charity’s work supporting vulnerable young people and adults across the North-east.
Matt, 53, who works as an HSEQ manager with Air Liquide, will begin the eight-day trek along the Lemosho Route on 4th June. The route is known for its spectacular scenery and demanding terrain, taking climbers to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain.
While no stranger to physical challenges, including the London Marathon and Hyrox events, Matt explained that the idea of tackling Kilimanjaro came unexpectedly after a conversation with someone who had previously completed the climb.
Although a regular gym-goer and swimmer, hiking had never been a major passion for Matt before deciding to take on the challenge. Since booking the expedition, training has stepped up significantly, with support from personal trainer Jen at Barry Stephens Gym alongside long-distance walks and swimming sessions.
Matt is undertaking the climb in support of Aberdeen Foyer, where his wife Allison works. The charity supports people across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire through housing support, employability, learning and training support, counselling and wellbeing services - helping individuals build confidence, overcome challenges and create positive futures.
Matt said: “If I was going to take on a challenge like this, I wanted it to mean something beyond just reaching the summit. Aberdeen Foyer does incredible work supporting people who are facing difficult circumstances, and I’m proud to be raising funds to help support that work.
The reality of climbing Kilimanjaro is starting to sink in now. There’s been a lot of preparation involved already, from training and equipment to visas and vaccinations, but I’m genuinely excited for the experience. I know there will be some very tough moments along the way, so every message of encouragement and donation really does make a difference.”
The challenge has also received strong backing from Matt’s family, including wife Allison, sons Ben and Jake, and Marley the family dog, who Matt describes as “the actual boss of the house”.
Funds raised through the challenge will support Aberdeen Foyer’s work with young people and adults experiencing homelessness, poverty, unemployment and other significant barriers.
