Meet the exciting people behind our member businesses.
Name: Gavin Shirley
Company: RES (Renewable Energy Systems)
Job title: Senior Development Project Manager
Give us the elevator pitch for your business.
RES is the world’s largest independent renewable energy company, with a proud history in Scotland. As early pioneers of wind turbine technology, we’re proud to have been innovators in the development of the global renewable energy market, with solar, storage and green hydrogen projects since added to our technology portfolio.
Who are your customers?
RES takes projects through the entire development process, from site selection to consent, and also delivers construction, asset management and O&M services on behalf of a diverse range of clients. In Scotland, we manage 780MW of generating capacity, including The Renewables Infrastructure Group (TRIG)-owned Meikle Carewe Wind Farm near Stonehaven.
What is the biggest challenge and opportunity your organisation is facing right now? (50/50)
The renewable energy industry’s biggest challenge is securing grid capacity across the UK, with long connection queues, and particularly high transmission charges in Scotland. Our greatest opportunity is energy security and decarbonisation, delivering projects that generate much needed electricity, while enhancing biodiversity, and providing tangible local economic and community benefits.
What is your advice for fellow Chamber members?
Build strong relationships early, as meaningful collaboration and transparency create better outcomes for everyone. Especially as industries transition toward more sustainable and resilient futures, being flexible and adaptable is also a key strength for any business.
What is the best thing about being a Chamber member?
Connecting and sharing knowledge with local businesses and communities. It’s a valuable platform to engage on our nearby projects whilst highlighting how renewable energy developments can support Aberdeenshire locally.
