SNP’s flagship national investment bank makes £138million loss
The SNP’s flagship investment bank has racked up a near £138million loss after a string of failures, new figures show.
Staff at the Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB) still took home an average pay package worth about £96,000 and the highest-paid staff member was on almost £250,000, despite “eye-watering” losses.
The bank was launched in 2020 under Nicola Sturgeon’s government with £2billion of public funding pledged for its first decade of operation.

Britain’s ‘productivity boom’ hidden by ONS data
Britain’s economy has undergone a silent “productivity boom” in the past two years, according to new research which suggests that official statistics have masked a dramatic improvement in output.
The Resolution Foundation, a think tank, said UK productivity has been expanding by 1.1% a year since late 2024, far above the official estimate of 0.2% from the Office for National Statistics.
Productivity growth, based on a worker’s output per hour, is central to ensuring long-term prosperity and rising living standards, and acts as a stabilising force on a government’s public finances.

World's largest heavy lift vessel carries oil platform to Shetland
The world's largest lifting vessel has arrived in Shetland carrying a giant North Sea oil platform to be broken up.
Allseas's Pioneering Spirit is 1253ft (382m) long and 407ft (124m) wide, with a 5,000 tonne crane for lifting the topsides of platforms.
The twin-hull vessel arrived in Lerwick Harbour early on Saturday morning with the North Cormorant platform on its deck.

Burnham to hand long-range missile blueprints to Zelensky as he visits Kyiv
Andy Burnham is marking his first foreign visit as prime minister with a trip to Kyiv - and will hand over blueprints so Ukraine can build its own long-range missiles.
The prime minister will chair his first meeting of the "coalition of the willing", set up by the UK and France under his predecessor, Sir Keir Starmer.
He is also set to accept an award on behalf of the British people recognising the UK's support for Ukraine and to take part in independence day events.

Our Union Street: ‘Things are turning around for Aberdeen, now we want to help other cities too’
The team behind Our Union Street threw their weight behind Aberdeen city centre when many others had written it off - now, they want to help other communities do the same.
Spearheaded by Bob Keiller, the group was formed in March 2023 following an emergency summit on how to tackle the decline of the Granite Mile.
Since then, an army of volunteers armed with paint rollers, brushes and buckets of soapy water have been working to transform perceptions of the city centre, helping make Aberdeen look cared for again.
