Top presenters must fight for jobs amid BBC Scotland cuts

A former senior BBC Scotland journalist has warned that some of its best-known presenters face losing their jobs, and its dedicated channel also faces being scrapped, as the broadcaster seeks to make millions of pounds of cost savings.

Douglas Fraser, who was the business and economy editor from 2008 until leaving in March, said the corporation was planning to reduce the number of its main presenters from nine to seven, and claimed the process would leave familiar faces vying against one another for their own jobs. One of the station’s most popular hosts, Anne McAlpine, left the broadcaster last week.

Writing on the online platform Substack, Fraser said that “the ubiquitous Martin Geissler, radio veterans Gary Robertson and Hayley Millar, Fiona Stalker plus ‘all the Lauras’: Goodwin, Maciver, Maxwell and Miller”, were under threat, alongside Amy Irons, the BBC Hogmanay host and radio and sports presenter, who on Saturday announced she was expecting her first child.

The organisation, whose members own more than 20,000 pubs, expects that the estimated closures will result in about 5,000 people losing their jobs, half of them under 25.
