Mercedes Villalba MSP visited the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) this week to explore how Aberdeen can lead Scotland’s energy transition while ensuring workforce retention and community benefit.
During the visit, AREG’s Jean Morrison provided an overview of the organisation’s work supporting renewable energy growth and collaboration across industry, academia, and local authorities. Discussions centred on the need for a balanced, inclusive approach to net zero that recognises the North-east’s long-standing energy expertise.
“AREG is committed to delivering a just transition by building on the region’s strengths in oil and gas while accelerating renewable energy development,” said Jean Morrison, AREG chairperson. “Synergy across sectors will be key to retaining jobs and securing long-term prosperity.”
Mercedes Villalba, Scottish Parliament Shadow Minister for Environmental and biodiversity Issues, emphasised the importance of regional leadership and cross-sector cooperation:, saying: “Aberdeen is at the heart of the UK’s energy future. This transition must work for workers and communities as well as the climate.”
The meeting brought together AREG board members, councillors, and industry voices who echoed the importance of aligning government policy with industry needs, accelerating investment, and supporting skills development to avoid workforce gaps during the shift to clean energy.
