National Gas has appointed Maskame & Tait Ltd, an established construction services provider and preferred delivery partner for both its projects and maintenance works, to lead the expansion of its St Fergus gas site, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development and local expertise.
The project will be delivered in collaboration with civil engineering specialists GJ Services Ltd and a skilled team of regional construction professionals, including Kevin O’Brien Architects. Together, they bring a proven track record, along with extensive experience in delivering high-quality project solutions, having recently completed the award-nominated refurbishment of the site’s original Main Terminal Buildings and ongoing improvement works at National Gas’s St Fergus site.
As a critical part of the UK’s energy infrastructure, processing around one-third of the nation’s gas, St Fergus plays a vital role in National Gas’s future strategy. This latest expansion will allow the company to increase operational capacity and support the transition to cleaner energy solutions, while continuing to meet today’s energy demands.
Louis Duthie, Senior Project Manager at National Gas, commented: “The West Compound Extension at St Fergus is a key enabler for our RIIO-T3 investment programme, ensuring we have the infrastructure in place to meet future energy demands and deliver our 'three-molecule' (methane, hydrogen and carbon) strategy. We’re proud to be working with Maskame & Tait and their regional partners, whose deep local knowledge and proven delivery capability reflect our commitment to supporting the local supply chain and creating long-term value for the community.
The 15,000m² site extension, being delivered by Maskame & Tait and their team over the coming months, will strengthen National Gas’s long-term infrastructure goals while benefiting the surrounding community. Maskame & Tait’s delivery model builds on a regional supply chain, supporting local businesses and keeping economic benefits rooted in the area.
In line with its social value commitments, Maskame & Tait will also continue its partnership with Peterhead Academy, offering pupils opportunities for site visits and hands-on learning as part of the project’s tree replanting initiative.
Scott Maskame, Director at Maskame & Tait, emphasised the project’s holistic approach to sustainability:
“In addition to environmental considerations, we’ve placed equal importance on supporting local economic and workforce sustainability. Our longstanding apprenticeship programme and network of local suppliers are well aligned with National Gas’s values and broader sustainability objectives.”
This expansion reflects National Gas’s ongoing investment in the North-east of Scotland and its commitment to working with trusted partners to build a more resilient and sustainable energy network.
