NEREC Ltd has completed a full interior deep clean of Aberdeenshire Council’s Macduff Waste Shed, a key recycling facility located on Old Gamrie Road.
The work was carried out during a planned weekend shutdown to ensure zero disruption to public waste services.
The Macduff Waste Shed operates daily to handle multiple waste streams and requires annual deep cleaning to maintain health, safety, and environmental standards. Aberdeenshire Council commissioned NEREC to deliver a comprehensive clean across the facility’s interior, including walls, floors, ceilings, beams, and structural steelwork.
The project presented several challenges: strict operational timeframes, contamination inherent in waste-handling environments, and extensive high-access requirements across the building’s large internal structure. When residual waste remained onsite at the scheduled start time, NEREC adapted its workflow to maintain productivity while awaiting full clearance.
To meet the tight deadlines, the team deployed dual pressure-washing systems, industrial floor scrubbers, and professional access equipment such as cherry pickers. Surfaces were treated using hot-water pressure washing followed by the application of a food-safe industrial degreaser to remove ingrained residues, oils, and organic material. This ensured the entire facility met required hygiene and safety standards upon reopening.
The work was completed on schedule, allowing staff to return on Monday morning to a fully cleaned and sanitised environment. The Council noted the improved working conditions and the minimal operational impact achieved through weekend delivery.
A spokesperson for the facility said: “The NEREC team did an excellent job. The shed looked spotless when we came back on Monday, and they managed to complete the work with minimal disruption. It’s reassuring to know the site is safe and hygienic for our staff again.”
Andrew Bruce, Managing Director of NEREC Ltd, added: “This project demonstrated our team’s adaptability under challenging conditions. Coordinating around operational schedules in demanding environments requires careful planning and robust equipment, all of which proved essential in delivering the required results.”
