Inchgarth Community Centre has celebrated the completion of extension works, carried out in response to the increase in demand for services and activities.
At an official ceremony on Saturday (22 August), Aberdeen City Council Co-Leaders Councillors Ian Yuill and Christian Allard were joined by members of the local community to celebrate the end of construction.
Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Ian Yuill said: “Inchgarth Community Centre is at the very heart of its local community. It is wonderful to see the new extension now open.
“From community groups and learning to events and sports, these new facilities will help to welcome more people through the doors and provide what local residents need.”
Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Christian Allard said: “It is fantastic to see the completion of the new facilities at Inchgarth Community Centre, supported by funding from Aberdeen City Council and the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund.
“This investment will help the centre continue to grow its activities and provide welcoming spaces for people of all ages across the local community for years to come.”
Business Minister Tom Arthur said: “We are pleased to have contributed £1.9 million from the Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund to help extend Inchgarth Community Regeneration Hub.
“The Bridie O’Connor extension, named after the Centre Manager and Chairman, Paul O’Connor’s late mother, adds that personal touch which truly has the community at its heart.
“Extending the community-run hall helps create more physical, economic and social regeneration to the town. It will continue to provide a more accessible, flexible and multi-purpose venue for the delivery of a range of services and opportunities that address the needs and priorities of the community to support people to live well locally.”
Inchgarth Community Centre Manager, Paul O’Connor MBE, said: "The entire team at Inchgarth, our users, and the community are delighted with the new extension that has increased our capacity by some 75 percent. We are grateful for the outstanding support from The Scottish Government and Aberdeen city council, where we now have a programme of over 200 sessions per week and modern facilities that will deliver meaningful services for decades. This is game-changing and will improve the lives of many people of all ages.”
Aberdeen City Council secured £1.9million from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund in June 2023 to support the project, with work beginning in April 2025.
This funding enabled the community centre to build the extension, including a new sports hall and changing rooms.
Since re-opening, the community centre now also includes a large cafe, outdoor cafe, changing rooms, a large hall and library, and is open 7 days a week.
