A newly released photograph appears to show Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell posing on the grounds of Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family's North-east residence.

The image - released over the weekend by the US Department of Justice - is part of a wider disclosure of documents known as the “Epstein files” and highlights the pair’s proximity to the world's elite before Epstein’s criminal activities became publicly known.

Epstein and Maxwell are seen smiling and dressed in country clothing with someone who appears to be a gamekeeper.

The Balmoral photograph is one of several now public. Others show the pair at Sandringham, in the Royal Box at Ascot, and even outside 10 Downing Street.

Prosecutors have said the material forms part of a broader evidentiary record, while officials have stressed that being pictured or named in the release does not imply any wrongdoing.

Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year sentence in the US after being convicted in 2021 of sex trafficking minors for Epstein.

Epstein died in a New York prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide.
