First Minister Nicola Sturgeon yesterday gave her backing to Labour's plans for a UK-wide publicly-owned energy firm.

Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to set up a publicly-owned clean energy company to rival EDF within the first year of a Labour government.

Great British Energy will be a new, state company that will generate renewable sources "to cut bills, create jobs and deliver energy independence", he said.

At First Minister's Questions yesterday, the Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, asked her if she would support the plans.

In response, Ms Sturgeon said she was “happy to give support to policies of that nature”.

The role of GB Energy will be to provide additional capacity alongside the private sector, to establish the UK as a clean energy superpower and guarantee long-term energy security.

The Times reports that a publicly-owned, not-for-profit energy company was the centrepiece of Sturgeon’s main speech to the SNP conference in 2017.

Ministers last year said they would shift to focus efforts on a “new dedicated national public energy agency” which is likely to be a largely advisory body.
