Much-loved news journalist Norman MacLeod will leave STV this week after almost four decades after presenting the channel's final dedicated North news programme.

Norman's departure comes as controversial changes to STV's news programming are set to take effect from next week, axing the region's dedicated show and instead producing a single news programme based in the Central Belt with regional segments.

Announcing his departure on social media, Norman said: "After almost 40 years it's time to leave STV.

"It's been a privilege and I have worked with some wonderful people over the decades.

"Not quite ready to hang up my headphones just yet though. Here's to the future."

Meanwhile, fellow STV News North presenter Andrea Brymer is to stay on with the channel and will present from Glasgow.

The shakeup to STV's news coverage was approved by Ofcom last month despite widespread concerns.

While STV has stressed its Aberdeen studio will still be "regularly in use", along with "newsgathering resources" in Aberdeen and Inverness, the changes still come as a blow to the North-east.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Russell Borthwick said it was a sad day for local journalism.
