A North-east business leader has received recognition from the Scottish Government after his Miles of Smiles campaign was praised for its contribution to mental health awareness, community engagement and charitable fundraising.
Marius Coste, Group Cleaning Manager at Elior UK, received a letter from Maree Todd MSP, Minister for Mental Wellbeing, Public Health, Sport, Alcohol and Drugs, recognising the achievements of the campaign and describing its fundraising impact as “truly impressive”.
Launched with the aim of encouraging conversations around mental health and reducing stigma, Miles of Smiles has grown from a personal challenge into a wider community initiative supporting SAMH and Clan Cancer Support.
The campaign has now covered more than 3,750km, raised over £11,000, and created opportunities to promote positive mental health conversations across the workplace and wider community.
The campaign has also supported the wider vision behind The Nook — a dedicated mental health community hub providing welcoming spaces for people to connect, access support and have conversations about wellbeing.
Marius said: “When I started Miles of Smiles, recognition was never the motivation. The aim was simple — to use my own journey to encourage conversations around mental health and support organisations helping people every day.
“The response from colleagues, businesses, charities, and the wider community have been incredible. This recognition represents everyone who has supported the campaign and shown what can be achieved when people come together behind a shared purpose.”
The initiative forms part of an 82-week challenge, with Marius continuing to complete weekly walks while using the platform to promote wellbeing, resilience, and community connection.
He added: “Businesses have an important role to play in supporting mental health. Creating environments where people feel able to speak openly, ask for support and look out for each other can make a genuine difference.”
Miles of Smiles continues its journey, with further activity planned throughout the remainder of the challenge in support of SAMH and Clan Cancer Support.
