The North-east has marked the 37th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster, in which 167 men lost their lives.

There were emotional scenes as families affected gathered at the Hazelhead Park memorial on Sunday, along with friends, colleagues and representatives of the oil and gas industry.

Flowers were laid at the memorial statue which bares the names of the 167 people who died in the tragic North Sea platform blaze overnight between July 6 and 7 1988.

Paying tribute, union RMT posted on social media: "RMT remembers.

"Today marks the 37th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster that claimed the lives of 165 offshore oil and gas workers and two seafarers who were part of the emergency response.

"Our thoughts are with all those that lost a loved one in this awful tragedy."
