Secondary pupils across Aberdeen City and Shire are using their maths skills to solve an energy industry challenge this month (November 2017) as part of TechFest’s ‘Maths in the Pipeline’ programme.

There are four events taking place throughout November which are sponsored by BP, Chevron, Emerson and SPE Aberdeen.

Pupils from S3 and S4 will join forces for a day of mathematical workshops and challenges, supported throughout the process by industry professionals who will offer them an insight into the world of oil and gas.

Maths in the Pipeline will begin with an overview of the global oil and gas industry and then the pupils will be set a series of challenges. These include Journey to the Centre of the Earth, which will test their skills in geology, and Installation Manager, a team based game which introduces the management of risk to personnel and the environment whilst producing oil.

The pupils will also undertake lessons in forecasting, business presentation skills, processing and transportation.

During the day, a highly competitive atmosphere will emerge between the teams as they undertake the business challenge, and each group will present and justify their solution at the end of the day.

The industry mentors from each of the sponsors will present workshops to the pupils based on real data, giving a genuine insight into the oil and gas industry.

Acting managing director at TechFest, Alies Bartelds, said: “Our popular Maths in the Pipeline project is a great opportunity for participants to get a real insight into how engineers and specialists in the oil and gas industry apply maths skills to solve everyday challenges in their jobs.

“Students can see first-hand how lessons learned in the classroom can be applied in the real world with the support of industry mentors, it might even get some participants thinking about the kind of job they’d like to have in the future.

“We’d like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters, without their continued support we wouldn’t be able to organise these events which are so important in developing students and inspiring them to pursue a career in STEM.”

Each year, TechFest runs the highly popular TechFest Science Festival which attracts tens of thousands of children and adults to a series of STEM-based events in and around Aberdeen City and Shire, as well as a year-round programme of educational events for schools and young people.
