Awards have been made this week to the winners of the Aberdeen Harbour & North East Scotland College Photography Competition, which has resulted in a suite of stunning images of the harbour, Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.

Developing into an annual event, Aberdeen Harbour Board and North East Scotland College (NESCol) set a double challenge to photography students – capture images of Aberdeen Harbour that could be used in Port’s Annual Review, and also capturing images that portray what fantastic areas Aberdeen City and Shire are to visit, to be displayed in the port’s 2018 calendar.

With cash prizes on offer, the competition proved to be very popular with more than 350 images entered.

“We picked a tourism theme for the calendar this year to reflect the current focus within the city and region on becoming ‘cruise-ready’ for the large cruise ships that will be able to visit Aberdeen once the new South Harbour is up and running from 2020 onwards”, explained Chris Bain, director at Aberdeen Harbour Board, “We also picked this theme as the city and shire offer a such great photographic landscape to pick from.

“This year we were lucky enough to attract guest judges, Chris Foy, chief executive of VisitAberdeenshire and Russell Borthwick, chief executive of Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, to our judging panel, which already included college photography lecturer Steve Smith, graphic designer Claire Cormack and myself, representing the Harbour Board. The guest judges have helped to really raise the profile of the event, and the standards expected from these young photographers.”

NESCol photography lecturer Steve Smith said:Working on an industry-led project, demanding creative interpretation of our diverse landscape and environment, is a fantastic engaging opportunity for students of all ages and experience. We sincerely look forward to working with the Harbour Board, Raven Red and the judges from Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce and Visit Aberdeenshire next year in the creation and execution of another challenging brief.”

A total of 14 students were successful in their submissions this year, sharing a prize fund of over £3,000. Aberdeen Harbour Board issue their Annual Review and calendar each year to a wide range of stakeholders and customers. The shortlisted images will be on display to staff, students and members of the public at NESCol Aberdeen City Campus (Gallowgate entrance) until December 15. Entry is free.
