One in six employers are expecting to cut jobs in the next 12 months and replace staff with AI, research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has warned.

The data comes as almost two thirds (62%) of those employers indicated that clerical, junior managerial, professional or administrative roles were most likely to be affected, The Times reports.

The startling statistics from professional human resources body the CIPD come from a survey of more than 2,000 employers.

More than a quarter (26%) of large private sector companies are expecting their staff headcount to drop, compared to 17% of private sector firms overall and 20% of public sector companies.

The jobs market continues to struggle with slower hiring rates since costs rose in last year's budget.

Last month Amazon confirmed it plans to cut 14,000 jobs with Beth Galetti, vice-president of people experience and technology, saying generative AI “is the most transformative technology” the world has seen since the internet.
