More than 2,000 buyers and sellers attended Thainstone Centre’s last collective sale of plant, machinery and equipment of 2018, which saw high prices achieved across all sections and an impressive 86% of all items sold – the highest rate of any collective sale held at Thainstone this year.

Mark Barrack, head of Thainstone specialist auctions, said: “Achieving this ambitious sales rate speaks to the popularity of this event and the advantages that the price-discovery method of an auction of this scale offers – sellers benefit from access to a strong market of buyers onsite and online, in addition to the expertise of our professional auctioneers on the day. We hope to build on the outstanding success generated from this sale into our next collective auction in January 2019.

“We continue to see a great turnout of local buyers attend the sale, as well as many buyers who join us from afar – in attendance were customers from as far north as Shetland down to Portsmouth, and from western Ireland all the way east to Warsaw, Poland. This strong attendance demonstrates our local and internationally-established reputation as one of Scotland’s largest and most popular sales of plant, machinery and equipment.”

The highest selling item of the sale from the tractor and plant section was a 2008 John Deere 7530 tractor, achieving £26,000. A 2008 JCB 3CX Sitemaster digger realised £25,000, followed by a 2011 Doosan DX225LC Tracked excavator which made £24,000, and a 2013 JCB 8055 RTS excavator which sold for £16,500.

The building equipment section saw an excess of stock submitted for auction from a large-scale, local construction project, which bolstered the number of lots entered.

In the light commercials and 4x4s section, the top two-selling vehicles were a 2016 Land Rover Evoque SE Tech TDi and a 2013 Land Rover Defender 110 County TDi, which realised £23,000 and £11,600 respectively. Other notable prices from this section include a 2015 Ford Ranger XLT TDCi which made £11,500 and a 2012 Volkswagen Transporter Shuttle SE which sold for £11,000.

A 2013 Iveco Eurocargo 180 c/w Hi-Ab topped the heavy commercials section, selling for £12,500, followed by a 2011 MAN 26 340 6x4, which realised £11,000. A 2012 Scania R480 6x2 sold for £10,800, and a 1992 Simon Gloster Fire tender, previously stationed at the Islay Airport, sold for £10,000.

Mark continued: “We were delighted to see the Simon Gloster Fire tender achieve such an impressive price. It was encouraging to see plenty of interest in this item prior to the sale in the press and on our social media posts, with an outstanding number of people taking part in our Facebook competition which was designed to get customers to guess the price.

“The diversity of the many items available for purchase continues to be a driving factor in the popularity of this sale, with customers attending to purchase everything from mowers, hand tools and bespoke one-off items, to major construction equipment, lorries and diggers.”

In the trailers, caravans and containers section, a Wilcox step-frame bulker trailer achieved the highest price of £3,900. Other notable prices in this section include a Neville Charrold bulker trailer which sold for £2,800, a Brian James triple-axle beaver tail trailer which realised £2,450, and a 10x8 toilet cabin which made £2,050.

A Macauley 14 tonne dump cart was the top-selling item in the farm machinery and equipment section, achieving £6,450, followed by a Kverneland ES 95 Vari width 5 furrow plough, which sold for £6,000. A Herron 24 T low loader trailer sold for £5,800, and a Vixen sandblasting cabinet realised £2,450 at the sale.

The live and online event, hosted by the Thainstone Specialist Auctions and Aberdeen & Northern Marts team, is held eight times per year at Thainstone Centre, Scotland’s premier auction centre. The sale is well-attended by both on-site and online buyers and sellers, with buyers from across Europe making substantial purchases through the sale’s online platform, i-bidder.
The next plant, machinery and equipment sale is scheduled for Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 9am at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie. Consignors are encouraged to submit their entries as soon as possible to receive maximum exposure to potential buyers.
