Pets’ Corner residents get a festive food feast

An early Christmas dinner was dished out to residents at Pets’ Corner in Hazlehead Park in Aberdeen today – a tasty dish of festive favourites brussels sprouts.

The pre-Christmas banquet was dished up to Lou Lou and Gethin the pygmy goats and they certainly enjoyed their vegetarian treat.

Aberdeen City Council operational convener John Wheeler said: “A lot of people don’t like brussels sprouts but Lou Lou and Gethin welcomed their early Christmas dinner and I’m sure would have had seconds if there had been extra!

“We look forward to welcoming lots of people – young and old – to Pets’ Corner over the festive period as it’ll be open most days.”

Meerkats Dee, Don and Den have proved a popular attraction at the facility, which had a £750,000 renovation and expansion including a larger area for the fish and reptiles, and the creation of a new education room.

As part of the renovations, a custom-built indoor and sleeping area, and large outside play area was especially built for the meerkats.

The work at Pets Corner included replacement of the roof over both parts of the buildings, internal alterations and refurbishment, the installation of new fish and reptile tanks, new external access ramp and paths, and an upgrade to the staff facilities. Friends of Hazlehead Park also supported the work.

Other animal attractions at Pets’ Corner include alpacas Archie and Buster, a kune kune pig, geese, turkey, chickens, sheep, goats, Shetland pony, miniature donkeys, fish, reptiles, budgies, ducks, guinea fowl, canaries, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, and Vadar the albino Burmese python.

The opening hours for Pets’ Corner from November to March are from 10am to 3.15pm, closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, January 1 and January 2.
