PlastiPrint 3D is proud to announce that they are the principle sponsor for PP3D, a 110kg fighting robot designed and built in Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire to take part in the new series of Robot Wars.
The team behind the robot were given only two months between confirmation of the new series and entering the Robot Wars arena with their creation.
Due to the incredibly short time scale for the project and the long lead time on parts that had to be ordered from the USA, 3D printing was instrumental in assisting with the development of PP3D. Full scale replicas of motors, batteries and electronics were 3D printed and the chassis built up around these. When the actual parts arrived, these were able to be slotted straight into the machine. A number of custom brackets and other small pieces were also 3D printed and used in the construction of the robot.
PP3D features a 31kg spinning disc weapon which spins at 1800rpm only millimetres off the arena floor, storing kinetic energy equivalent to dropping a 100kg weight 30m.
The team Captain Gary Cairns said, “3D printing was instrumental in allowing us to complete the project on time. With out the ability to mock up parts quickly and create custom brackets in a few hours, we wouldn't have been able to compete on the show”.
The team was also sponsored by another Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce member, Leak Heat, based in Cruden Bay. During the very short testing phase Leak Heat used their thermal imaging technology to allow the team to take a look inside the robot and spot any issues.

PP3D will be on tv screens during the fourth episode of the new series on BBC 2 on the August 14.
