Aberdeenshire was firmly placed on the television map last night after starring in the thrilling finale to the hit show Peaky Blinders.

Portsoy Harbour was the setting for the long-awaited showdown between Tommy Shelby and his nemesis Michael Gray.

Over four million people are understood to have tuned in to the final episode of the programme's sixth season, which locals hope will draw new tourists to the region.

The season features the culmination of the Shelby family story as they deal with the aftermath of Tommy's failed assassination attempt on Oswald Mosley and explore who betrayed him.

Production for the final episode brought Peaky Blinders to Scotland, as numerous scenes were filmed in Aberdeenshire as producers utilised the picturesque landscape in the country.

Portsoy’s old harbour was transformed into Miquelon Island, a French outpost in the Atlantic Ocean. Buildings throughout the 17th century fishing harbour were given a makeover to ensure they looked like they were from the early 1900s

The Shore Inn pub was completely transformed into the fictional Hotel Lanaan as filthy windows and a tattered sign was installed onto the building. Wooden cladding and outbuildings were also added to other nearby properties.

And it was this set which played host to the final encounter between Tommy and Michael.

Locals reported seeing a range of actors in costume at the harbour where they rolled barrels and wound-up large ropes, with a number of extras being hired from the area.

The water was also used, with some scenes being filmed on a small red boat.

Following the filming in Portsoy, the director of Peaky Blinders Anthony Byrne paid tribute to the local people and thanked them for their patience and help while they were on location.

He said: "A huge thank you to the people of Portsoy who welcomed us and let us take over their town for a week. It has been an absolute joy.”

Peaky Blinders first aired on BBC Two nine years ago to widespread critical acclaim.

Ratings grew from two million for the first series to more than four million by series four and it found further popularity on Netflix.

The crime drama is now expected conclude with a film.
