US President Donald Trump has welcomed the UK Government's decision to approve the Jackdaw gas field, describing it as great news for Aberdeen.
The President, who owns a golf resort at Balmedie in Aberdeenshire, said the decision would bring wealth and prosperity to the UK and the North-east of Scotland.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, he said: “The U.K. has started drilling in the North Sea, one of the greatest and most prosperous areas of OIL in the World. They should go FULL BLAST!!! This will make the U.K. very wealthy again. TAKE DOWN THE COSTLY AND RIDICULOUS WINDMILLS!”
Mr Trump also described the approval as “great news for the wealth and prosperity of the United Kingdom, and the wonderful region of Aberdeen”.
His intervention follows comments earlier this month in which he claimed people in Aberdeen were “dancing in the streets because the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has stated that he will be opening up, all the way, the invaluable North Sea Oil!”
Jackdaw, located around 150 miles east of Aberdeen, is operated by Adura, the joint venture between Shell and Equinor, and is expected to begin supplying gas to British homes and businesses by the end of October.
At peak production, Jackdaw is expected to account for around 6% of UK Continental Shelf gas output, producing enough energy to heat more than 1.4 million homes.
Mr Trump has repeatedly called for the UK to expand North Sea production and criticised Britain's investment in offshore wind.
