Thainstone Centre welcomed over 2,000 buyers and sellers on Saturday, 30th June for its fifth collective sale of plant, machinery and equipment of 2018. More than 3,115 lots were entered in the sale and 82% of all lots sold on site and online, with strong demand and high prices achieved in the farm machinery and equipment section.
John Angus, Aberdeen & Northern Marts Head of Livestock, said: “The warm weather drew large crowds to our Saturday sale, where we had a fantastic offering of equipment available for buyers and saw strong selling prices across all sections – particularly in the farm implements and machinery category.
“It is characteristic in June to see a surge in demand for balers and grassland equipment, especially this year due to the fine weather, leading most farmers to cut grass early to stock up ahead of winter. Farm trailers also sold well, which is typical to see in the approach to harvest. The high standard of farm equipment entered at our Saturday collective sales have led to higher selling prices, as our customers appreciate the quality of equipment we have on offer.”
A Welger RPC 245 baler sold for £21,200 in the farm machinery and equipment section, claiming the highest price of the year in the sale category. It was followed by a Claas 4700P forage wagon, which achieved £15,900. Other high prices in this section include a Bunning muckspreader which made £9,600, and a Pottinger MexVI chopper which sold for £8,900.
In the heavy commercials section, the top-selling item and leading price of the sale was a 2013 Volvo FH500 6x2 Mid Lift Artic, selling for £30,000. Following the top-priced item in this section was a 2006 Volvo FM9 8x4 plant lorry with a Palfinger 44t crane which realised £29,200, a 2014 Scania R445 6x2 tag axle artic that sold for £27,000, and a 2008 Merc Axor 2633 cement mixer that made £11,000.
A 2012 Hyundai Robex 1402C-9 excavator achieved the highest price of £27,200 in the tractor and plant section, followed by a 2012 Manitou MLT1440 telescopic handler, which sold for £26,000. Other notable prices in this section include a 2012 JCB JS160 excavator that realised £24,500, and a 2007 Volvo L90E articulated loading shovel.
In the light commercials and 4x4s section, a 2016 Ford Transit 460 17 seat minibus made the highest selling price of £13,000, and a 2012 Land Rover Discovery XS SDV6 auto sold for £12,000. The third highest selling item, a 2005 Toyota Landcruiser Amazon 4.2TD realised £10,800, and was followed by a 1998 Peugeot Boxer motorhome which sold for £10,500.
The trailers, caravans and containers section saw a 2017 Fruehauf tri axle alloy bulker claim the top price, achieving £29,800, followed by a 2006 Faymonville tri axle extender low loader, which realised £11,800. A Macauley tri axle Extender low loader sold for £5,200, and a Frueafauf Skelly timber trailer made £3,800.
Mark Barrack, head of Thainstone Specialist Auctions, said: “We are delighted with the strong results achieved at this sale. We saw a higher number of lots and greater values of items sold, which is an increase from last year’s June sale. Our reputation as Scotland’s largest collective plant, machinery and equipment sale, alongside the power of the auction system, can be attributed to the high prices at this sale, along with the weaker sterling currency and strong export demand.”
A Cushman diesel-based replica of Thomas the Tank Engine, which was purchased at Thainstone nearly 20 years ago and entered at this Saturday Sale, achieved an outstanding price of £9,000. The Thomas replica has raised thousands of pounds for charity through its appearances at various games and rallies in the North East, and was recently upgraded with a Massey Ferguson four-wheel drive that was also purchased from Thainstone’s May 26th Saturday collective sale.
Mark continued: “We were particularly happy to see the Thomas the Tank Engine replica sell for an impressive £9,000, a very telling indication that the price discovery mechanism of the auction is a fantastic way to accurately achieve the true market value of one-off and bespoke items, which may otherwise be difficult to put a price on. With the intensive marketing campaign executed for this unique lot across our Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and websites, we were able to maximise its value and successfully find the Thomas replica a new home.”
The live and online event, hosted by the Thainstone Specialist Auctions and Aberdeen & Northern Marts team, is held eight times per year at Thainstone Centre, Scotland’s premier auction centre. The sale is well-attended by both on-site and online buyers and sellers, with buyers from across Europe making substantial purchases through the sales online platform, i-bidder. Nearly 90 registered buyers joined the sale remotely via i-bidder from the UK, Ireland, Czech Republic, and Romania, with 18 bidders successfully purchasing 26 lots online.
The next plant, machinery and equipment sale is scheduled for Saturday, 18th August, 2018 from 9am at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie. Consignors are encouraged to submit their entries as soon as possible to receive maximum exposure to potential buyers.
