Buyers and exhibitors were presented top-quality prime cattle and sheep today at the 25th Aberdeen Christmas Classic at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie

Judged by James and Ross Allan, Malcolm Allan Ltd, Larbert, Stirling, the open haltered beef cattle class saw a 620kg Limousin cross heifer exhibited by Harry Brown, Auchmaliddie Mains, Maud, achieve the overall champion title. The heifer went on to sell for £4,600 to Malcolm Allan, Larbert. The reserve champion, presented by Murray Rainnie, Loanhead, Logie Coldstone, was another Limousin cross heifer, weighing in at 586kg and sold for £3,300 to Frasberburgh-based butchers Bruce of the Broch.

The Butchers’ cattle class champion title was achieved by Andrew & Reece Simmers, Backmuir, Keith, with their 546kg Limousin cross heifer, ‘Ruby Red’, that sold for £3,800 to Forbes Raeburn Butchers, Huntly. Exhibited by W Peters, Monzie, Crieff, the reserve butchers’ cattle champion was a Limousin cross heifer called ‘Tricky Treacle’, and was purchased by W T S Forsyth, Peebles, Tweddale, for £3,000.

In the Young Farmers cattle section, judged by Jamie Scott of John Scott Meats (Paisley) Ltd, the overall championship was awarded to Mark Robertson, Easter Fodderletter, Tomintoul, for his 640kg Limousin cross heifer, which made £3,000 to Judge Jamie Scott. The reserve overall champion title was awarded to a 622kg Limousin cross heifer, presented by R Davidson, Keith Commercials, Keith, and sold for £3,000.

Catherine Beaton, South Auchmaliddie, Maud, took the championship title with her Limousin cross heifer, weighing 610kg in the Young Farmers unhaltered beef cattle section, which sold for 290 pence per kilo to Forbes Raeburn Butchers, Huntly. The reserve championship was achieved by another Limousin cross heifer, weighing in at 790kg and exhibited by W & J Brown Hilton, Culsh, New Deer. The reserve champion went on to sell for 240 pence per kg to G Cameron, Archaracle, Argyll.

The unhaltered beef championship was judged by Ian Sim of Kincraig, Brechin, who awarded the champion title to a 578kg Limousin cross heifer presented by B Duffton & R Stuart, 2 Bogie Street, Huntly. The champion went on to sell for 305 pence per kilo to Bruce of the Broch, Fraserburgh. Achieving the reserve champion title was J Thomson, Middleton of Potter, Potterton, for his Limousin cross bullock, scaling 665kg and 260 pence per kg, and was purchased by B T Kitson Butchers, Hutton Rudby, Yarm.

Prime Cattle Auctioneer Alan Hutcheon, said: “Prime cattle throughout the sale made a first-class trade, with haltered champions and reserve champions all selling for £3,000 or more. We are very happy with the results, and all exhibitors should be proud of the work they’ve done at the Classic this year.”

Prime lambs also met a strong, steady trade at the Christmas Classic today. The Overall Champion pair was exhibited by 11-year-old Seth Miller, The Lurg, Midmar. His excellent pair of Beltex lambs scaled 42.5kg and realised £300 per head to the judge, Mr Sam Carlisle, Border Meats, Lockerbie. The reserve champion pair were the Suffolk cross entry from G L Stuart, Milltown of Birness, Ellon, and fetched £180 per head again to the Mr Carlisle.

The Butchers’ Champions were awarded again to Beltex-sired lambs from D Smith, Scobshaugh, Cortachy, by Kirriemuir. They sold at £250 per head to John Scott Meats, Paisley. Reserve award in the Butchers section went to W & D Moir Livestock, Home Farm, Cairness, with a pair of striking black lambs, sired by a Blue Texel, and sold for £220 each to Gordon Troup, Shaggart, Sauchen.

The Young Farmers champions were shown by William & David Moir, Home Farm, Cairness and sold for £270 per head to Backmuir Livestock, Keith. The reserve Young Farmers exhibits came from Gary Morrison, Bush of Muldearie, Keith and sold at £190 each to John Scott Meats Paisley.
