Sir Graham Brady, most senior Tory backbench MP, is facing mounting calls to press for Liz Truss to resign after a chaotic day in parliament yesterday.

Friends of the 1922 Committee chairman told The Times he was “naturally cautious” and was reluctant to act unless a significant number of colleagues came forward demanding the Prime Minister goes.

He is also concerned that attempts to remove Truss would lead to further turmoil in the markets.

However, the chaotic events in parliament on Wednesday — including Tory MPs clashing publicly, claims of bullying by whips and the resignation of the home secretary — have increased pressure on Brady to act.

There are suggestions that there will be a significant rise in the number of no-confidence letters submitted by Tory MPs.

PM has '12 hours to save job'

This morning, a Tory MP claimed Liz Truss has just 12 hours to save her job while another argued the Prime Minister should be ousted from No 10 today.

Simon Hoare said that if the Prime Minister was given a "career review" today then "the score sheet isn't looking very good" and she does not have long to turn things around.

Asked if he believed Ms Truss is up to the job, Mr Hoare told the BBC: "I think she could be. One can't say hand on heart today. If this was a career review... then the score sheet isn't looking very good. But I am a glass half full sort of person.

"Can the ship be turned around? Yes. But I think there is about 12 hours to do it. I think today, tomorrow are crunch days."

Former minister Crispin Blunt was... more blunt. He said: "We need to effect a change, frankly today, in order to stop this shambles and give our country the governance it needs under our constitution."
