James Hutton Institute, Scotland’s pre-eminent interdisciplinary scientific research institute for the sustainable management of land, crop and nature resources, is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Graham Ferrier as the new Head of Department for Information and Computational Science (ICS).

Professor Ferrier joins the Hutton from the University of Hull, where he served as Head of the School of Environmental Sciences for five years.

His research focuses on developing new insights into geographical, sustainable and environmental processes and anthropogenic-related effects at a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. This work is interdisciplinary, highly applied and place-base, with projects based both in the UK and around the world.

In his role at the Hutton, Professor Ferrier will lead the ICS Department, overseeing research into a variety of fields ranging from genome scale bioinformatics to the modelling of soil and climate information on a geographical scale.

Professor Ferrier said: “I am looking forward greatly to working with the excellent team of researchers in ICS and to assist in developing new modelling and monitoring approaches to help shape a fairer, brighter and net zero future.”
