The Aberdeen Rapid Transport (ART) project could cost up to £323million - more than double the original estimate.
The plan, which was first tabled in 2022, would see the introduction of a fleet of bespoke tram-like buses, much larger than normal buses, and upgrades to routes and stops.
The Press and Journal reports the rapid transit vehicles would run along two fast-track routes – one from Blackdog to Westhill, and one from Craibstone to Portlethen via the city centre.
Aberdeen City Council bosses are hopeful the project could reverse the "poor perception" of public transport in the city.
But now, with a new report signaling the projected cost of the scheme is already spiraling, programme manager Kirsty Chalmers explained this is due to a 25% jump in construction costs and putting aside extra cash for more studies and design work.
