Public health expert to talk about Humanising Health Care

A leading public health expert in Scotland will give a seminar at Robert Gordon University (RGU) this autumn to highlight best practice and transformative practice occurring in Scottish healthcare.

Dr Margaret Hannah, Deputy Director of Public Health at NHS Fife has joined RGU’s School of Health Sciences as visiting Professor of Public Health.

Dr Hannah has had a long association with RGU in particular with the Occupational Therapy undergraduate programme where the principles of Fifth Wave Thinking have been integrated throughout the curriculum.

These principles have also been embedded in the university’s MSc Health Promotion and Public Health course as well as Integrating Fifth Wave Principles into Professional Practice.

Dr Hannah will present an inaugural seminar from midday on Monday, October 12 at the university’s Faculty of Health and Social Care, to address the key themes and ideas from her recent book ‘Humanising Healthcare.’

The seminar is an opportunity for an invited audience with an interest in ‘health’ in its widest sense to engage in a conversation regarding current challenges and to explore opportunities for new ways of addressing these.

Elizabeth Hancock, Head of RGU’s School of Health Sciences, said: “Dr Hannah is a highly respected expert in the field of public health and we are honoured that she has joined the School as a Visiting Professor.

“Health in its widest sense affects us all and allied health professionals are key members of the healthcare team who can make a significant impact to the complex health challenges we face today.”

Dr Hannah said: “Healthcare systems across the developed world are in trouble as changing patterns of disease, an ageing population and advances in drugs and technology feed an inexorable rise in costs outrunning our best efforts to contain them.

“I’ve looked at examples of healthcare from around the world in my book and will discuss a range of alternatives which could lead to a more sustainable culture of healthcare in the UK that will enable us all to live healthy, fulfilled lives at a fraction of the current cost.”

Invitations are currently being extended to a set guest list and places are limited. However, if you have a particular interest and wish to attend, please contact RGU’s Events Manager Barbara Jones via: b.a.jones@rgu.ac.uk
