PureGym confirms multi-million pound investment in Aberdeen to help make the Granite City an even fitter city

PureGym is celebrating the opening of its third and fourth 24-hour gyms in Aberdeen with a campaign to help the Granite City be even fitter and healthier.

Aberdeenshire’s voice coach to the stars, Yvie Burnett, and Russell Borthwick, the chief executive of Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the investment in new gym facilities that will help Aberdeen residents get even more active with the Granite City, Fit City campaign.

Yvie, the mezzo-soprano from Methlick, said the opening of new, 24-hour PureGyms at Wellington Circle in Altens and Hill of Rubislaw in coming weeks has inspired her own mission to train for the Great Aberdeen Run 10k this August. At a launch event yesterday, Yvie revealed that she will be spearheading the “PureGym Fit City Team” which will be recruiting members from now through to July 2018 from across the four Aberdeen gyms.

She said: “I’ve always worked hard on making fitness a priority in my life but, as a busy working mum, taking time to get a proper work out in can be a real challenge.

“Along with the PureGym Fit City Team, I will be running the 10k in Aberdeen this August. Having the flexibility – and excellent value – of PureGym to support my training means I will be better able to make a real go of it. I’ll even be ‘vlogging’ my training efforts to encourage others – and to keep me on track!”

PureGym has backed the Granite City, Fit City campaign as it invests around £2.6m in facilities that will make it easier and more convenient for Aberdonians to get fit. The gyms are a unique addition to the city as they offer low-cost, high-quality fitness clubs with 24-hour access and no contract. The new gyms will create 20 new jobs in the city, including 16 self-employed personal trainers who will support the fitness ambitions of PureGym members. Recently PureGym also completed the refurbishment of its gym at Shiprow in Aberdeen.

Russell said: “There is no doubt that a fit and healthy workforce is a happier and more productive one which is why the Chamber welcomes PureGym’s significant investment into Aberdeen. We would encourage the business community to get involved with the Granite City, Fit City campaign which emphasises the benefits – both physical and mental – of getting more active.”

Humphrey Cobbold, chief executive of PureGym said: “We are delighted to celebrate the opening of Aberdeen’s third and fourth 24-hour PureGyms as well as the launch of the Granite City, Fit City campaign.”
