Vladimir Putin has rejected a peace deal in Ukraine following talks with the US in Moscow.

Donald Trump sent a special envoy of son-in-law Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to the Russian capital but, after five hours of deliberations, the Kremlin said it was "no closer" to a breakthrough.

Russian president Putin, The Times reports, accused European countries of attempting to sabotage peace talks by making "absolutely unacceptable" demands.

He went on: “We are not planning to go to war with Europe. But if Europe wants to and starts, we are ready right now.”

Despite the lack of a breakthrough and Putin rejecting a revised peace deal, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the meeting had been “useful, constructive and meaningful”.

He added: “We are no closer to resolving the crisis in Ukraine, and there is much work to do.”

US president Trump described the situation in Ukraine as a "mess", while his secretary of state Marco Rubio said of a peace deal: "We’ve gotten closer, but we are still not there."
