Ukraine's foreign minister has warned Putin is "testing the West" after Russian drones entered Polish airspace and were shot down during at attack on Ukraine.
Polish prime minister Donald Tusk has alerted Nato to the first major breach of European airspace since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
The Polish military labelled the incident an “act of aggression that posed a real threat to the safety of our citizens”, The Times reports.
Several airports, including one in Warsaw, were shut down as the military scrambled to respond to the Russian drones.
Reacting to the development on social media, Ukraine foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said: “Putin just keeps escalating, expanding his war, and testing the West.
“This situation shows that finally the decision needs to be taken to enable partner air defence capabilities in neighbouring countries to be used to intercept drones and missiles in the Ukrainian air space, including those approaching Nato borders.”
The Times reports Polish defence minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said Poland was in “constant contact with Nato command” and that aircraft had “used weapons against hostile objects”.
A ground search for drone wreckage is now also underway.
