Mr Turnbull, who is a senior lecturer in retail marketing at Robert Gordon University, backed The Press and Journal's campaign calling on the Scottish Government to amend business rates legislation to make properties eligible for relief as soon as they are vacant.
At present, only businesses moving into units which have been empty for six months or more can claim rates relief.
Mr Turnbull said amending this rule would "stimulate economic recovery", adding: “In Aberdeen specifically, rates relief could support ongoing regeneration efforts.
“The city continues to invest in infrastructure and redevelopment projects designed to make the city centre more attractive and accessible.
“However, regeneration is much less likely to succeed if commercial units remain empty.”
