A recent Robert Gordon University (RGU) graduate has been selected to have his work exhibited at the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture (RSA).
Daniel Cardno studied the Masters of Architecture at RGU’s Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment and graduated with distinction in summer 2016.
The exhibition, named RSA New Contemporaries, runs from the February 18 to March 15 and represents the RSA’s commitment to promoting contemporary art in Scotland.
He was approached for the RSA exhibit after winning The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) silver medal.
Daniel’s project focuses on the Marine Research Centre, which is located in a proposed sustainable settlement within the Eidsvag bay, Norway.
Speaking about his involvement with the exhibition, Daniel said: “I am honoured to have been approached to showcase my work in this exhibition.
“My proposal focuses on the transition of developed skills associated with the oil and gas industry and their application towards creating a healthier economy concentrated on maritime industry and tourism. The design is an adaption of the vernacular boat shed form found on the east coast of Norway.
“I worked extremely hard on this project and it is always great when your hard work is acknowledged in this way.”
David Vardy, lecturer at Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Design, added: “Daniel's Marine Research Centre is an exemplary piece of architectural design. His handling of form and use of blackened timber demonstrate a highly appropriate sensitivity to the unique qualities of this remote Nordic water’s edge setting.
“His drawings are beautifully atmospheric and the models express a sophisticated timber construction. It is fitting testament that his work be selected for the RSA New Contemporaries Exhibition.“
Now in its ninth year, the RSA New Contemporaries exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see some of Scotland’s finest emerging talent under one roof.
Showcasing 66 graduates selected from the 2016 degree shows, the exhibition will feature a wonderful array of painting, sculpture, film making, photography, printmaking, architecture and installation.
The selection was made by exhibition convener Delia Baillie RSA, with assistance from fellow academicians and representatives from the five main colleges of art.
