A team of Robert Gordon University (RGU) students will host a Race Night in Aberdeen next month to raise funds to deliver health, nutrition and sport sessions to young people in India this summer.
The fundraising event for the university’s RGU GO: India project will be held on Saturday, June 4 at 7pm in the RUA Masonic Social Club on West Craibstone Street.
Backed by Olympic rowing champion Dr Katherine Grainger CBE, RGU GO: India is linked to the award-winning Aberdeen Youth Games (AYG) which promotes physical activity, health and wellbeing to young people in Aberdeen.
Later this year a multidisciplinary team of twelve students travel to India for four weeks in August and September.
Entry for the Race Night is priced at £10 per person and it will be the first of several fundraising events that the RGU GO: India team will organise in the coming months.
On the night, pre-recorded races on DVD's will be projected onto a big screen and players will be able to place bets on the runners they think may win.
The participants can pick a horse from the runners in the programme, a horse name they like or their favourite number. In advance to the evening, people interested can buy jockeys, owners or even sponsor a race. Additional games and extra prizes will also be on offer throughout the evening.
Organiser of the Race Night, RGU Events Management student Laura McDonald, said: "The Race Night has been great fun to organise, especially when working with students from different disciplines.
“This event is an opportunity for all members of the RGU GO: India project to come together for a main event as part of our group fundraising efforts. We look forward to welcoming our guests to a fun night at the races!"
The race night has also received sponsorship from Pollock Precision Engineering Ltd and Warddykes Primary School PPA Group.
Students working on the RGU: GO India project will travel to Manipal, in South-Western India, in August.
There they will collaborate with an equivalent team of students from Manipal University to deliver health and fitness orientated activities to children and young people in the local community.
Prior to their departure, the team is required to raise £6,600 which will be used to hire equipment and facilities, and run the activities.
