A graduate physiotherapist from Robert Gordon University (RGU) is part of an intrepid trio of women who will be taking on the World’s Toughest Row in 2026.

Lauren Wilde-Arnold will be joined in a boat by Ellen Clark and Jenna Volpert when they embark on their 3,000-mile row across the Atlantic Ocean from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua next December.

Over roughly 40 days at sea, the rowers, known as the Saltire Tides, will face towering 40-foot waves, unpredictable weather, sleep deprivation, and the inevitable salt sore, all while taking turns rowing two to three hours at a time, around the clock.

Lauren, who graduated from RGU in 2023, said: “All of us grew up by the coast. Our love of open water has shaped who we are, from Aberdeen to Jersey to East Lothian. We met while living together and quickly discovered a shared appetite for adventure. Taking on this challenge is our way of encouraging others to push their boundaries, say “yes” to opportunities, and believe that with determination, ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things.”

“Right now, our training is focused on building a strong fitness base through indoor rowing, cycling, running and strength work. Once spring arrives and our boat along with it, you’ll find us out on the water as often as possible. That’s the part we’re most looking forward to.”

Saltire Tides are taking to the oars to raise vital funds for The Archie Foundation, a charity that supports children and families across Scotland when unexpected health challenges turn lives upside down. From creating child-friendly hospital environments and funding specialist equipment and training, to providing compassionate bereavement support, The Archie Foundation is there when families need it most. As healthcare professionals, this cause is especially close to our hearts, and we’re incredibly proud to row in support of such an inspiring charity.

Their first fundraising challenge kicks off on 19 December, when Saltire Tides will take on a 14-hour festive rowing marathon at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee — a true test of endurance, teamwork, and determination.

Saltire Tides are calling on the community for support as the trio prepare to take on this immense challenge. Local businesses and individuals can get involved through title, gold, silver or bronze sponsorships, by sponsoring an oar, or by joining the £250 Club, where your name or logo will be proudly displayed on the boat as a unique global marketing opportunity.

Every contribution makes a difference — and we also welcome smaller individual donations or conversations around bespoke sponsorship opportunities. If you’d like to get involved and support this incredible cause, please get in touch.
